The nation loves fish and chips and our customers just adore out beer-battered fish and chip, made with Marston’s Pedigree, a little sparkling mineral water and fried in the cleanest oil, thanks to our state-of-the-art oil filter. But as leading Derbyshire caterers, and with our very popular fish and chip van for weddings, we get asked a lot ‘just what made this tantilising treat a nation’s favourite?’
Fish and chips first became a popular meal amongst the UK’s working classes during the 19th century as a consequence of the rapid develpment of trawl fishing in the North Sea. The development of railways conected the major ports to industrial cities and that meant that fresh fish could be rapidly transported to heavily populated areas. Deep-fried fish was first introduceed to the country in the 16th century by Jewish refugees from Portugal and Spain and is derived from ‘Pesdcado Frito’. By the late 1860’s, the first fish and chip shop was opened in London by Joseph Malin.
